South African townships (underdeveloped villages on the edge of towns) are some of the most dangerous places in the world. Don’t believe us? Check out just a few of these statistics:
- Over 40% of South African women will be victims of sexual violence in their lifetime.
- Children are the victim of 41% of reported acts of sexual violence.
- 1 in 4 sexual violence cases are unreported.
Imagine you were there.
Imagine you aren’t just reading this story on an app in America. You’re smack dab in the middle of a South African township. Sure, it might be light outside now, but you know that night is coming. You know what night brings.
Where would you go if you had to escape? How would you find safety in a place that the police won’t even go into? These aren’t easy questions to answer even here in America in your own neighborhood, but they’re impossible to answer in South Africa.
This year at Journey, you’re going to get to learn more about Safe Place, a new ministry designed specifically to answer these types of questions and more. Born out of our partner church, Norwegian Settlers Church, Safe Place is a haven that anyone can escape to if they are feeling in danger or have been attacked just outside of their township. Since these safe places exist outside of the townships, the police are able to actually offer assistance that wouldn’t have been available before now.
Don’t miss your chance to be a part of creating something with the power to change lives in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the world!
